IP HM Baggage Brake

Indian Pacific HM

From 1917 it was possible to travel Trans-Australia by rail, but the trip involved 4 seperate journeys due to country's historic gauge problem. In 1969 a standard gauge railway line across Australia was completed, creating an uninterrupted rail link from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Indian Ocean in the west. The inaugural journey of the standard gauge Indian-Pacific train commenced at Sydney Central Station on Monday February 23 1970, arriving in Perth on the west coast on February 27.

The 2,715 mile (4,352 km) route winds through some of Australia's most spectacular country, and traverses the world's longest straight section of rail track, 299 miles (478km) accross
the vast Nullarbor Plain.

The stainless steel cars for the new passenger service were constructed by Commonwealth Engineering (Comeng) in granville N.S.W, and entered service between 1969 & 1975.
