King's Park State Hosp.
The King's County Asylum was established in 1886, and survived 10 years until being taken over by New York State in 1895 when it was renamed the King's Park State Hospital. The facility was largely self-suffcient, which not only had its own food, but generated its own heat and power.
This route shows the short special siding built by the LIRR to serve both the hospital itself, and the powerhouse on the hospital property. The track orientation is as it would have looked in the early 1900's to 1936, after which a number of sidings were removed and track orientation changed.
The spur remained in use until the mid 80's, ans was the only hospital that still generated its own power at the time.
