Heartland America

The Birch and Declaration Line, a fictional route,is located in the heartland of America. What is now the Birch and Declaration Subdivision of the Union Pacific was once a joint subdivision of both the UP and BNSF until the two railroads sold their interests to some entrepreneurs who did not have much success. When the railroad business increased markedly the UP decided they needed to expand and the B&D owners were willing to sell. Warren Buffet was not interested. The B&D has changed considerably since the the UP took over. There was a massive fire at the refinery in Birch which destroyed the refinery as well as several surrounding businesses. The refinery has been replaced with a modern ethanol plant while a revamped recycling operation and an electric motor manufacturing plant now set where the old metal recycling operation existed. Declaration yard now has a busy train-to-truck site, a new manufacturing plant and a cold storage facility. The city of Deane has a couple of new grain operations while in Allison the Coors barley pick-up site has been modernized and a new granary has been erected. Energy hill continues operation and the UP has built a small engine house for the pusher diesel that is used to push coal cars to the unloading site. The large wind mills require continuous maintenance. Keenan has a couple of new trackside features and the bentonite plant continues to be a busy operation. As always, the yard facilities in Declaration and Birch are poised for action and the myriad industries on the B&D await receiving and shipping products.
