BR N2 Late Logo Linned Ramsbottom
The Gresley N2 came about due to the need for more passenger tank engines on the GNR. To fulfil this requirement Gresley drew up plans for an improved Ivatt N1. One of the main improvements on the Ivatt N1 was the use of piston valves compared with the N1’s slide valves. This caused the boiler to be pitched higher and as a consequence of the design needing access to the Metropolitan lines, the boiler mountings were squatter when compared with the N1’s. The entire class was also superheated from new and Wakefield mechanical lubricators where fitted for cylinder lubrication. GNR built 60 locos numbers 1606 to 1615 and 1721 to 1770. These where constructed at Doncaster and NBL. Further locos where built by the LNER, all these locos where right left hand drive. The construction of these was spread between 1925 and 1929 and built at Beyer, Peacock & Co, Doncaster, Hawthorn Leslie & Co and Yorkshire Engine Co. The majority of the Class where based in the south on the ex GNR lines mostly operating from Kings Cross. A number of locos was also sent to Scotland based around Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. The N2’s weren’t successful in Scotland and when the Gresley V1 locos were introduced they soon headed back south. There were also a useful number of locos based in the West Riding district of Yorkshire. The allocations remained virtually unchanged throughout the BR Period Except for the final years of steam when a number went to Peterborough New England and Grantham. The class was finally withdrawn in September 1962. This loco represents linned Ferret and Dartboard livery with Tall chimney, Ramsbottom saftey valves and left hand drive.
