VR B van - yellow

Built from 1958 to 1961 using underframes from scrapped I, IA, and KF wagons, these general purpose box vans were built to cater to an increase in 'van' type goods traffic not suited to louvered vans in the 1950s, and as a stopgap till more bogie vans of similar types could be built. From construction till withdrawin in the 1980s, these vans saw several modifications, including additional gussets around the body/frames, and steel floors for palletised goods. In the late 1970s and 1980s at least 25 B vans were re-classed to HD for use in 'departmental' traffic (ie workshop, way and works, and similar), and could be found in many way and works trains in these years.

This model represents a Victorian Railways B van, B379, as seen around the Steamrail Victoria Newport Workshops yards in VR 'Hansa' Yellow livery, with patched paint and rusted bodywork. Although this vehicle did not operate in this livery, it is a distinctive version of this van.
