VR M class Type 1 version 'b'
Built between in three batches 1884 and 1886 by the Phoenix Foundry in Ballarat, the M class 4-4-0T was the first suburban tank locomotive ordered by the Victorian railways since 1861. The M class were based on a pattern locomotive supplied by Beyer Peacock in 1879, and were quite successful in their role as suburban passenger engines on the south eastern lines, and were used almost exclusively on the Kew branchline in the 1890s. However their range was limited due to their small bunkers. The M class were originally fitted with steam brakes, with a member being used to test the Woods Hydraulic brake in 1884. Later all members were fitted with the Westinghouse air brake, which became the standard on the Victorian Railways. Beyween 1901 and 1905, all members of the class were rebuilt to 4-4-2T locos, with larger cylinders, new front bogie, a radial axle at the rear, and a larger bunker and water tanks. This rebuild made the class the equal of the E class 2-4-2T locos.

This model represents the Phoenix Foundry built M class locos as first built, in the earlier more intricate two tone green livery, with alteration for air brakes. It features highly polished brass and boiler, burnished and painted wheels, and a westinghouse air brake. Also featured is an operating/animated reverser in the exterior view, an animated smokebox door, animated windows, scripted marker lights, couplers, 'filler lids' on the tanks, and animated sander, as well as scripted smoke effects.
