Brisbane Four Motor Tramcar 494

A total of 155 Four Motor type tramcars were built by the Brisbane City Council between 1938 and 1964. Trams were built in batches.
Each batch would introduce subtle changes to the style of the car i.e. interior wood grain paneling was introduced in 1948.
This model represents numbers between 493 and 502 which where built in 1948 and 1949.
Cars were equipped with 4x40 hp AGE247 motors mounted in trucks built by the B.C.C. based on the Melbourne No.15 truck.
Trolley pole bases were MMTB type and utilised the trolley wheel contact method.
494 was the first tram to be equipped with internal wood grain paneling. 497 was the first car in Australia to enter service with resilient wheels in June 1949.
Internal Conductor mirrors mounted on the end bulkheads were introduced in this series.
These mirrors allowed the conductor to observe passengers entering or alighting from the end doorways no matter where the conductor was standing in the tramcar.
Here, this tram 494 is presented in the way it would have appeared when it was built in December 1948. Notice the all over silver paintwork. It's contemporaries had grey roofs.
No.494 has been preserved and is awaiting restoration to running order at the Brisbane Tramway Museum.
