NSWR RU Wagon 24100

RU Wagon of NSWR.

The RU wagon would be the best known wagon of all the different U & K wagons made from the 1920's to the 1960's and the very early 1970's, the RU wagon was a metal roofed U or K wagon, which offered much better protection to the important powder cargo they would have carried over the NSW rail system.

The orginal code for these wagons was CCU, based upon the CU wagon for which the CCU/RU wagon is based upon, the CU wagon being a U or K wagon with a permant tarpaulin covering the wagon, in other words the CU stands for Covered U, the RU standing for Roofed U.

The cargo for these wagons would have been very important cargo, wheat, grain, and other such important cargos that were being carried over the NSW railway.

The 24100 is the first of the proper coded RU wagons the very first wagon being 2970 but this wagon was coded CCU and by the near end of the same year it was re-coded to RU and re-numbered to 24100.
