Nella ricerca di una nuova e veloce locomotiva per treni merci, la Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) nel 1934 fu attratta dalla proposta della Berliner Maschinenbau (BMAG, ex Louis Schwartzkopff) per la realizzazione di una locomotiva 2-8-2. L'Ufficio progetti delle Reichsbahn accettarono questa proposta ed incaricarono la BMAG di progettare e produrre due prototipi.
Nel gennaio 1937 i due prototipi di locomotive, 41 001 e 41 002, furono consegnati alla DRG, che dopo averli accuratamente testati decise di acquistarli. I prototipi dimostrarono presto la loro potenza,le elevate prestazioni e qualità di guida, oltreche la loro eccezionale accelerazione.
Dall'ottobre 1938, venne avviata la produzione su vasta scala delle locomotive classe 41 locomotori ordinati dal ribattezzato (dal febbraio 1937), Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB). Tutti i maggiori produttori di locomotive in Germania parteciparono alla costruzione delle locomotive, compresi BMAG, Borsig, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen, Henschel & Sohn, Jung Lokomotivfabrik Arnold, Krauss-Maffei, Krupp, Orenstein & Koppel e Schichau.

In the search for a new, fast, goods train locomotive, the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) in 1934 was attracted by the proposal from the Berliner Maschinenbau (BMAG, formerly Louis Schwartzkopff) for a 2-8-2 (1'D1'h2) engine. The Reichsbahn Central Office Engineering Works(RZM) eventually agreed to this proposal; the BMAG was tasked to develop the proposed design and produce two prototypes.
In January 1937 the two prototype locomotives, 41 001 and 41 002, were delivered to the DRG, who subsequently tested them thoroughly and bought them. The prototypes soon proved themselves, with their power, performance and quiet riding qualities, as well as their exceptional acceleration.
From October 1938, the first full-scale production Class 41 locomotives were ordered by the now renamed (since February 1937) Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB). All the well-known locomotive manufacturers in Germany participated in the building of the locomotives, including BMAG, Borsig, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen, Henschel & Sohn, Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik, Krauss-Maffei, Krupp, Orenstein & Koppel and Schichau.
The advent of war increasingly stifled the purchase of fast goods train locomotives until, in January 1941, the existing orders were cancelled completely. On 2 June 1941, MF Esslingen delivered the last Class 41 locomotive, no. 41 352, to the DRB. With that a total of 366 engines of this class had been built in just under four years.

Auf der Suche nach einer neuen, schnellen Güterzuglokomotive favorisierte die Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) 1934 den von der Berliner Maschinenbau AG (BMAG, vormals Louis Schwartzkopff) vorgelegten Vorschlag einer 1'D1'h2-Lokomotive. Das Reichsbahn-Zentralamt Maschinenbau (RZM) nahm diesen Vorschlag schließlich an. Die BMAG wurde beauftragt den vorgelegten Entwurf durchzukonstruieren und zwei Baumuster zu fertigen.
Im Januar 1937 wurden die beiden Baumusterlokomotiven 41 001 und 41 002 an die DRG abgeliefert, durch diese nachfolgend intensiv erprobt und abgenommen. Schon die Baumusterlokomotiven konnten durch ihre Leistung und Laufruhe sowie durch das außergewöhnliche Beschleunigungsvermögen überzeugen.
Im Februar 1937 erfolgte die Umwandlung der DRG in die Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB); diese gab ab Oktober 1938 dann die ersten Serienlokomotiven der Baureihe 41 in Auftrag. An der Fertigung der Lokomotive waren alle namhaften deutschen Lokomotivhersteller, wie BMAG, Borsig, Maschinenfabrik Esslingen, Henschel & Sohn, Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik, Krauss-Maffei, Krupp, Orenstein & Koppel und Schichau beteiligt.
