La classe 44 (in tedesco: Baureihe 44 o BR 44) è stato un dieci-coupled, pesante treno merci locomotiva a vapore costruita per la Deutsche Reichsbahn come una classe standard di macchina a vapore (Einheitsdampflokomotive). E 'stato destinato per la trazione di treni merci fino a 1.200 tonnellate per le rotte attraverso le regioni collinari della Germania (Mittelgebirge) e fino a 600 tonnellate su pendenze ripide
I primi 10 esemplari sono stati costruiti nel 1926. Dal 1926 al 1949, per un totale di 1.989 locomotive sono state fabbricate.
