QR 1550 Class #2424

1550 Class

Similar in body appearance to the 2100 class, the 1550's were assembed by Clyde Engineering under license from GM-EMD. Introduced in 1972, the 1550's were originally purchased for general traffic but with sixteen models being used, these were all pressed into service, the last, No. 1565, was named Alva C. Lee, in honour of a former QR commisioner.

Further deliveries of essentially the same EMD model came through after continued ordering from QR and varied mining companies, the later models, classified 2400, 2450 and 2470 with a 'one off' order to the Townsville Harbour Board in 1981, No. ST5. ST5 was absorbed into the QR fleet in 1988 and renumbered 2507.

Like all 2100 class locos, the 1550's have been rolling through the Redbank Workshops for conversion to driver-only units. Nos. 2410 and 2415, however, have been retained for emergency Brisbane surburban passenger working.
