QR 2800 Class
2800 Class
While Queensland Railways placed its faith in electrification projects throughout much of the 1980s, no
more new diesels were ordered until 1993, when A. Goninan & Co successfully tendered to build forty
double-cab 2237 kW main line diesel-electric locomotives for use over the non-electrified Townsville-Mt Isa
and Rockhampton-Cairns routes.
These 'dog-bone' 2800-class locomotives, which ride upon Goninan-fabricated Co-Co bogies, were at the
first diesels in Queensland to be given cabs at both ends. This eliminated the need for turning at terminating
stations. Although the first one emerged from the maker's Townsville factory for testing on the Greenvale
line on 26th May 1995, none entered actual revenue service until 15th September 1995.
Designated model CM30-8, they became the most powerful diesels operated by QR, before the release of
the 4000-class. In many respects, the 2800-class 'technical prototype' in Australia was the Westrail P-
class which, when introduced from December 1989, became the first narrow (1067 mm) gauge railway in
the world to utilise GE's 'DASH-8' technology.
The 2800-class was originally built with 920 mm diameter wheels but these were changed to 950 mm
wheels from about the seventh delivery. These larger wheels were provided to enable two flange turnings
during their lifetime rather than one. The larger wheels placed the draft gear higher and this had to be
reworked to bring it into line with the vehicle couplings.
Earlier locomotive deliveries were subsequently retrofitted with revised equipment. Because the 2800-
class' bogies are tri-mounted on rubber, early problems surfaced due to the tight curvature in some QR
yards. The curvature was distorting the rubbers.
