Giant's Causeway, Portrush & Bush Valley Railway four-wheel carriage no.2. Built in 1883 as a closed 1st-class carriage although latterly the wooden seats lost their cushions. Seating for 18 passengers. All the GCP&BVR passenger rolling stock was designed with access from one side only - the landward side. Carriage no. 2 was withdrawn on the line's closure in 1949 and is now preserved in the railway gallery of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Cultra, near Belfast. The GCP&BVR began as a steam-operated roadside tramway mainly concentraing on passenger workings but, initially at least, intended to develop as a freight route serving local mineral workings etc. The freight traffic never materialised and it rapidly became a typically-decorative Victorian pleasure line with most traffic during the summer months. The initial steam working was augmented by electric traction from about 1883 making it one of the first to do so in the British Isles and the very first that used hydro-electric power from its own generating station on the Bush River.
