Glenariff loco shed

The single-track locomotive shed at Gleraiff was built in 1872 for the two Stephenson tank locos used by the Glenariff Iron Ore and Harbour Company. This mineral railway was four miles and 5 furlongs long and was used to ship ironstone from the company's mines in Cloughcor, high in the glen, down to its own pier at Carrivemurphy. It was not a commercial success and closed in 1880. The two locos were sold to the Lough Swilly Railway and the buildings were sold off. The engine house is now part of the local parochial hall.
