Jet Sled A23
Project X - The X-1 was the first in a series of black project and experimental types, designed to explore new concepts and push the limits of known technologies. This particular design was created with high speed personal commuting in mind, but it wasn't long after testing began that someone realised that speed was one thing, getting past the 5 past 9 stopping train to all stations west was really the challenge. The limitations of the concept showed up elsewhere too, although designed for a maximum two people, there was only room for 'one' brief case and it was also heavy in fuel consumption, making the jet sled the perogative of the privileged few who could afford it.
Now in the new millenium, the type has seen a resurgence in the leisure based society we find ourselves in, it has become a popular sporting machine with point to point dashes and time over distance trials, with individuals experimenting with their own modifications to get that extra 1 or 2 mph, but it's a dangerous existance, more than one has been known to pass a mainline express, without the benefit of rails beneath their steed. A brief but brilliant career that seems always to bring fresh blood in to the sport.
