Arun River Bridge

This unusual span is also known as the double bridge built around 1861 on the Brighton
South Coast Railway Company over the River Arun. Originally built with just the lower brick arch it resulted in
a 1 in 80 (1.25%) grade up to Ridgwick Station. The Board of Trade decided that was too steep so the iron
girder bridge was built on top of the original brick arch resulting in a 1 in 130 (0.77%) grade. The bridge still
exists today and is used by hikers, horse back riders, and bicyclists.
