SAR Station Siding - Gumbowie

Gumbowie was a small station on the Peterborough to Terowie line and opened on 11th May 1881. The name originates from a pastoral station that was established in 1852. The site is was the second highest station on the South Australian Railways routes at 602.2m above sea level, until 1970 when it was the highest with the closure of Belalie North along the line between Peterborough and Jamestown.

The station consisted of a number of cottages and in the earlier years included a signal box but was removed sometime between 1920-1930.

During the construction of the standard gauge line from Broken Hill To Port Pirie the narrow gauge line from Peterborough to Terowie was converted to Broad Gauge in 1969 although the narrow gauge system continued until the start of 1970. With the broad gauge in use from early 1970 onwards the station became a siding and the buildings decayed and eventually removed. Regular passengers’ services ceased in December 1986 and the final broad gauge service along this section of the line departed Peterborough at 0645hrs, Tuesday 2nd December 1988. The tracks where later removed in 1992/1993.
