Captain's Flat 3
The Railway from Bungendore to Captain's Flat branches off the Sydney-Canberra line. It was built for the Lake George Mines Company to serve the mines at Captains Flat. It was built in the war in 1940 and closed in 1969. At the time, the mine was the second largest in NSW after Broken Hill.
Captain's Flat was named after a large white bull named 'Captain'who lived on the river flats there.
The mine produced Gold, Silver, Lead, Copper, Zinc and Iron. In all 4,000,000 tons of Ore were extracted. At present increasing metal prices have restarted prospecting in the area. The pollution from the former mine devestated vegetation in the area. The cuttings and cliffs are to be found on SirGibby's Site.
