Moe to Walhalla 2

The 2' 6' narrow gauge line from Moe to Walhalla was started in 1904 and reached Walhalla in 1910 just in time to see the great Long Tunnel Gold Mine close.. The line passes through picturesque scenery in Gippsland and particularly so between Erica and Walhalla where the hills and valleys are very impressive. At present Volunteerers are restoring the line from Erica to Walhalla. The section from Thomson River to Walhalla is already in use for Tourist Traffic.
The industry on the line was chiefly timber and livestock. The line closed from Erica to Walhalla in 1945 and from Moe to Erica in 1954, The last kilometre of track to Walhalla was particularly dramatic runnig in the gorge of Stringers Creek which was so narrow and steep that the line ran almost exclusively on 6 trestle bridges strung along the valley wall.
The Tyers River Railway is shown as far as Collins Mill.
The locomotives used on the line included a Garrat of which two were operated by the railways in the State of Victoria. Appropriate narrow gauge rolling stock can be found on SirGibby's Web Site. The cliffs and cuttings are on SirGibby's Site also. Animated figures are from neoklai75's site.
