The Industrial Revolution in the UK had reached its climax by about 1840 and housing was needed for vast hordes of unskilled men and their families. The solution was to quickly build back-to-back houses as cheaply as possible. No thought was given to health or sanitation but they had to endure- so much so that in urban areas slums like this could be seen up until the 1930s.
