The St Maries River is a shortline hauling mainly logs. It makes extensive use of former Milwaukee mainline and equipment.

STMA operates freight service to a connection with UP at Plummer, ID, 71 miles. Rail includes 75, 90, 100, 112-115 and 132 pound sections. Track capacity is 263,000 pounds.

Traffic includes lumber, plywood, logs, chips, garnet sand, and inbound shipments of fertilizer and veneer - 11,500 cars per year.

This line is part of the MILW main line from Plummer to St. Maries and MILW's Elk River Branch from St. Maries to Bovil. The line was acquired when MILW discontinued operation of its western lines in 1980. Service started May 23, 1980.
