The chimneys are another characteristic feature of Scottish tenement buildings, serving the fireplaces on the inside rooms of each block - in the days before central heating coal fires against the winter's cold were a necessity in as many rooms as possible.

The screenshot shows how the chimneys are usually sited: the model is set at an average height for the four-storey buildings, but there's room for variation.
