At a time when coal was king domestically as well as industrially, weighbridges played an important part in the transportation of goods, facilitating the pricing of loads by comparing the empty and laden weight of wagons and vans, as well as ensuring they weren't overloaded. Being precision instruments, rules for their use were strict: locos weren't permitted to cross them, so their location would be on a separate spur. This asset is based on photos of the rail weighbridge at Alnwick in Northumberland, where a photo from the late steam age shows the spur holding thirteen assorted wagons and a long-wheelbased van: a parallel track extended further, curving round the side of the terminus building to coal drops, at the end of which was another weighbridge - this time a road one, so that onward deliveries of coal could be priced accurately.
