In 1974, Austrian State owned locomotive builder Simmering-Graz-Pauker (SGP) issued two prototype units of the Class 1044. The design incorporated stepless thyristor control and a bogie torsion system to transfer weight from one wheelset to another when tractive effort is applied to the body. These features provide a very high factor of adhesion.

Spring controlled lateral motion reduces transverse forces applied to the wheelsets when negotiating curves; and the locomotive's formidable one-hour rating of over 7,000hp makes it ideal for working Austria's gruelling alpine railways.

The succesful prototype led to orders for 96 units, and the Class have seen frequent service hauling express passenger and heavy freight services over the 1 in 32 (3.1%) grades of the Arlberg ramp.
