NSWGR 74 Class 7402

NSW Government Railways 74 Class Shunter (F)

Ever mindful of the economic benefits of diesel over steam, the NSW Government Railways continued to keep a close eye on developments overseas, particularly the United States. The success of the SW7 was noted and an order was placed for 10 trial units in 1950. Despite newer models becoming available in 1951, the administration was content with it's choice, and the first unit arrived on board the 'Brisbane Star' in March 1951.

After local alterations and light engine trials, the locos were soon put to work and were commonly found around the Alexandria and Darling Harbour goods yards. Over time, most of the class migrated to the steelworks at Port Kembla, where they fought a losing battle against heavier loads and newer, more powerful shunters made in Australia.

The last of the class was withdrawn and cut up for scrap in 1967. Unfortunately none were preserved.
