The increase in railway traffic during the Second World War resulted in many stored steam locomotives being returned to service. Unhappy with this situation, the NSWGR attempted to obtain 12 300hp shunting locomotives under the Lend Lease arrangement.

The NSWGR then reconsidered their options, deciding that the little locomotives would not be powerful enough, and so reduced the order from 12 to 4. Arriving in November 1943, a number of modifications were made to the design to bring the body within the NSW loading guage. Marker lights, buffers and screw couplings were also fitted.

The 79 class spent their working life as carraige shunters at the Redfern Carraige Works and performing other mundane yard duties. In 1948, 7921 and 7922 were returned to the Commonwealth Government where they were used at Woomera, Port Pirie and Port Augusta under the guise of the DE class.

Today 7921 is preserved at the Rail Trainsport Museum in Thirlmere, NSW, whilst 7922 (DE91) is preserved at the Port Dock Railway Museum in Adelaide, South Australia.
