NWR No.5 'James' Tender (black unnumbered)
This is a tender belonging to one of many North Western Railway tender engines, designed via Topham's own pen with inspiration from the work of Henry Fowler. This particular example is painted in North Western black and lined in red, as seen in 'Thomas the Tank Engine' and the TV series special 'The Adventure Begins' as being James' livery. Although James' livery on the LMS before arriving on Sodor would also have been black and red, he would not have had a Fowler tender at this point and therefore it is to be assumed his Book 2 depiction is an NWR livery.
