BR Class 35 Blue
The Type 3 'Hymek' Locomotives were constructed by Beyer Peacock between 1960 and 1964. Powered by a single Maybach 16-Cylinder air cooled engine which produced 1,700HP. This was coupled to a mechanical-hydraulic power delivery system. The original order for 45 locomotives was eventually extended to 101 units numbered D7000 - D7100.
These locomotives replaced many of the steam locomotives in the West and South Wales. They were to be seen all over the Western Region and their passenger duties would often take them onto the Southern region. Freight workings would also see them in the LMR and ER yards.
When built the locomotives were finished in Brunswick green with white window surrounds and a light green sole bar. Yellow end panels were later applied and some members of the class received full yellow ends. When BR blue was adopted this livery was applied to the entire fleet.
Although given the TOPS classification of Class 35, none of the fleet were ever given these numbers.
