The 230 class (ex BR 130 DR) brought mass produced 3000hp diesel locomotives onto German tracks for the first time. from 1970 onwards they were bought by the GDR State Railways. The locomotive has diesel-electric power-transmission. They incorporated 16 cylinder type 5 D 49 diesel engines. The 6-axle engine had an operating weight of 120 tonnes. The locomotive with a speed of 140km/h in principle could only be used for hauling goods, as it did not have means of heating the train. It was not possible to introduce this succesfully until later 132 class.
Due to the decline in freight traffic after reunification many diesel locomotives became surplus. The engines of class 132 (since Jan. 1 1992 class 232) will probably be rebuilt successively into class 134 using the 140km/h bogies of the deactivated class 130. This rework also affects the external appearence of the locos, especially as far as the ventilators, the roof armatures and the arrangement of the engine room windows is concerned. As part of this rework the motors are replaced as well.
The political turning point in the GDR did not pass by the railways without making its mark. With the unification of East and West Germany the previous systems of the East German State Railways and the Federal German Railways came to an end. With the fall-off of many transport services, the diesel locomotives also lost their traditional uses. Many locomotives were therefore retired from service.
When smaller private railways specialising in different services came into being, there were greater demand for more powerful diesel locomotives. Subsequently a new use was found for many diesel locomotives of the Soviet type. Lok 230 077 was totally modernised.
With its attractive livery it is now in the service of the TLG (Transport und Logistik Gmbh) and hauls heavy trains throughout Germany. Even today it is impossible to get by without the robust technology of this star export of the former Soviet locomotive industry.
