Metro North Commuter Railroad GP8 543

543, was originally a GP7 built for the New York Central in May of 1953 as engine 5770. Its number remained 5770 during the Penn Central era and was rebuilt by Rock Island's Silvis Shops in 1978, while under Conrail. It was then renumbered as 5432, and was reclassified as a GP8. When Metro North took over, they gave it its current number, 543. 543 has always been a long hood forward engine.
