SJ class Du
SJ class Du
This is the first engine type of the Swedish D-series. Delivered by ASEA/Motala Verkstad in 1925. The D-series locomotive was a new type of engine which was needed in the expanding electrification of the Swedish railroads. From 1925 and for almost 50 years the D-series were dominating at SJ and its highly modern engine made it useful in varying service around the country. In 1933 they were renamed and added with a second letter to distinguish their special service: Ds for express train (snälltag); Dg for freight (godstag); Du for mixed service (universell); Dk for heavy express trains; Dr for Dk engines with higher gearing (rapid).
This particular locomotive, No:116, was first delivered as class Dg, geared for freight train service. It was rebuilt and fitted with a steel body 1956 and re-classed to Du.
The locomotive was taken out of service in Jun 1980 and scrapped in Vislanda in Sep 1980.
