BR Class 23 Baby Deltic Napier T9-29 1100hp Enginespec
Enginespec for Napier T9-29. Power 1,100hp, TE 47,000lbf, maximum speed 75mph. Correct loco mass 75200 kgs.
The 10 examples of the English Electric 'Baby Deltic' type 2 locomotive were introduced from 1959, and were used on mixed traffic workings on the southern end of the ECML. By mid-1963 all 10 locomotives had been laid up at Stratford due to engine problems. A refurbishment program was agreed with the engine manufacturers, commencing in Spring 1964 and all 10 locos were back in service by mid-1965. As part of the refurbishment the locos were fitted with centrally mounted headcode boxes, and painted in two-tone green, like their larger cousins the Deltics. Towards the end of the decade British Rail realised it had too many type 2 locomotives and too little work for them, and so this small class of 10 was progressively withdrawn from the autumn of 1968. The two final locos, D5905 and D5909, lingered on working pw trains until the end came in Spring 1971. Only one loco, D5909, had received corporate BR blue livery before the withdrawals commenced, the rest remained in green.
Notes for CAB driving - It is recommended that this enginespec is used in conjunction with my MK1 coach and wagon enginespecs for best performance.
