NSWGR D53-class Wampu tender, weathered
NSWGR D53-class Wampu tender in weathered condition. These tenders were fitted to most superheated 53 class when commissioned in the later 1910s. They replaced an earlier tender design of lower capacity. The tender could carry 4000 gallons of water and 13 tons of coal.
In the late 1940s the Wampu tender started to be replaced by the 'Commonwealth (Engineering)' turret tender. By the 1960s only a few of D53-class locomotives retained their Wampu tenders.
The tender is fitted with NSWGR 'unit drawgear', which is a form of dual screwlink/hook and knuckle coupler. By swinging the coupler on a hinge by 90 degrees, the active coupler type was changed from screwlink/hook to knuckle. These connectors started to appear on locomotives in the 1940s to bridge the phase-out period of hook couplers. The user can change between hook and knuckle couplers using this asset's properties editor in Surveyor and View Details in Driver.
This asset mates with <kuid:368725:15035> 'NSWGR D53 standard goods engine, weathered'.
