NSWGR BBW riveted ballast hopper
First manufactured by Ritchie Brothers in 1928, BBW hoppers became the standard NSWR Way & Works ballast hoppers for over 60 years. Initially of riveted construction, later versions entering service after WW2 were welded. NSW Railway Workshops built welded hoppers in the late 1950's.
As introduced, they were coded BBW and also carried the W 'Way & Works' rollingstock numbering. After 1979, they were recoded NHWA for plain bearing, or NHWF for roller bearing fitted wagons.
Prior to WW2 diamond-frame bogies were fitted. They were later upgraded with 2BN bogies and then with roller bearing type bogies of various designs (XCG, XCF, XCL). While diamond or 2BN bogies are better suited for this model, no suitable bogie asset of these bogie types is available on the DLS for Build 4.0 or greater. Consequently, a roller-bearing XCL bogie asset has been selected.
The hopper has 3 isolated compartments, each with a bottom-dump door and a product queue. The end compartments have a capacity of 13250 litres and the centre compartment's capacity is 7500 litres.
