NSW culvert portal with outward-projecting wing walls, cut sandstone, 5ft aperture
The portal to a culvert used to take watercourses through railway embankments in NSW. The portal has a wing wall projecting at 22 degrees from each side. The wing walls prevent embankment erosion around the upstream portal during floods.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries stone masons were employed to shape sandstone for culvert portals and tunnel lining.
This culvert is 5ft wide at its base.
