IC Lightweight Baggage (rebuilt)

Illinois Central Heavyweight conversion baggage car. When purchasing new 'streamlined' equipment, many railroads updated older heavyweight equipment to match it, rather than purchase new. Such is the case here. An old, heavyweight baggage car received an updated roof and doors, and served for many more years.
Started in 1947 to compliment their all-Pullman Panama Limited, the City of New Orleans left Chicago and New Orleans every morning, and arrived at its destination around midnight. It was made famous in the song of the same name by Steve Goodman.
City of New Orleans standard consist: Baggage, Baggage Dorm, 3 56 seat coaches, Lunch counter/lounge, 3 56 seat coaches, Diner, 56 seat coach, 2 48 seat coaches, lounge/observation car.
