BVG Gisela GI/1E Driver Car

In Berlin’s U-Bahn network, 50 double-engine cars of the GI/1E series operate on small profile lines. They are popularly known as Gisela (German girl's name) by the BVG staff and many train enthusiasts.

They were built from 1988 to 1989 by VEB LEW for the East Berlin Transit Authority (BVB) before the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany in 1990. When these vehicles were inherited by the (then western) Berlin transit authority (BVG), The Grunewald workshop was in charge of maintenance of the Giselas.

Unfortunately, many of Gisela’s sisters were malfunctioning after a short period of operation and many were eventually condemned to the communist sector of Korea. On the lighter side however, some of them worked in Athens with the GIII series until 2000.

By the late 1990s, spare parts were harder to find to keep the Giselas running properly so BVG had to take drastic action. Therefore, in 2003, they and Vossloh Electrical Systems decided to rebuild the Giselas to the GI/1E standard, which still operates to this day.

20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Giselas are being built again from the original drawings of VEB LEW and the new technologies of Vossloh: this time... the client is you!
