LNER Ex-GER Class N7 0-6-2T
The L77 Tanks were built to a design by A. J. Hill- the last locomotive superintendent of the Great Eastern Railway- to replace aging 0-6-0Ts and 2-4-2Ts on suburban traffic in and around London. Two prototypes entered service in 1915, but due to the First World War further production couldn't ensue until 1921. A final batch emerged from Stratford Works in 1923-24, by which point the GER had become part of the LNER and the engines were reclassified 'N7'. The LNER continued to produce N7s at Gorton and Doncaster, with further examples being outsourced to Robert Stephenson & Co. and William Beardmore & Co. The last examples were withdrawn by BR in 1962, but the final Stratford engine, No. 69621 (originally 999E) was preserved.
