BR Class 423 4VEP TSO Connex

Formation: DTC + TSO + MBSO + DTC

Following the successful tendering of both the South Eastern and South Central franchises in 1996 by Connex, the company set about repainting their large fleet of VEPs into their yellow, white and blue livery. From the start the application of both the South Central and South Eastern logos located only on the driving trailers was sporadic with many running with no logos as this model represents. Connex was to lose both the South Central (to Govia in 2001) and South Eastern (to state owned Southeastern trains 2003) franchises, the livery was retained on most examples until final withdrawal in 2005. However the logos were removed and left blank following transfer to the new franchisees.

The British Rail Class 423 4-VEP (Vestibule Electro Pneumatic) 3rd Rail EMU was argueably the backbone of British Rails Southern region fleet for 38 years (1967 - 2005), although intended for semi stopper work, they were often seen on express and suburban services as well. They were the most numerous of all Southern EMU types, with 194 built, they operated on all three Southern Region Divisions (Those being South Eastern, South Central and South Western Divisions).
