TGOJ class Ma

In the beginning of the 1950's traffic intensity grew rapidly and the demand for more locomotives were strong. On the Northern main line heavy engines were needed in order to pull the more heavier freight trains on its steep slopes. There were thoughts of a 6-axle locomotive, possibly a modernized version of the popular Mg, but there were also thoughts of a new locomotive with coupling rods. After having evaluated offers for both types SJ decided to order the modernized Mg and the new engines was to become class Ma. The first Ma locomotives pulled passenger trains between Stockholm-Boden and Ange-Boden.

32 Ma engines in all were delivered to SJ between 1953-1960 and 9 engines were delivered to TGOJ between 1953-1954.
