SAR NG4

These locos were originally built for the Natal Government Railway as the third batch of their class N. The first batch from Hunslet, the second from Hawthorn Leslie and the third from Kerr Stuart, accordingly there are various differences. The Hunslet locos were never given an SAR class, whilst the Hawthorn Leslie locos became NG3 and the Kerr Stuart ones NG4 when the NGR was absorbed by the South African Railways. They were eventually replaced after the arrival of the Garratts but some saw industrial service. A single locomotive survives at the Sandstone Estates in SA.
