The Victorian Railways X Class Diesel Electric Locomotive's 1st Series and 2nd Series were rebuilt by Freight Australia from 2001 by fitting them with older G Class Engines, replacement of the DC Generator to a Alternator, motors changed to the Type D77-B, re-gearing from 59-18 to 61-16 for higher continuous tractive effort, the frames where ballasted for higher axle loads, a newer computerised traction control system which increased adhesion to 40% and the cab was heavily modified to allow for one man operation, these locomotives are restricted to 50kph when running long end first.

after the take over of Pacific National the Rebuilt X Class where re-classified as XR and numbered 550 to 555, another 4 where built from Scratch by Pacific National.
