NSW Illawarra & Southern Highlands Part 3
Located one hour south of Sydney NSW, the Illawarra region is centred around the coastal industrial City of Wollongong and the deep water port at Port Kembla.
South of Unanderra, the line winds its way through reasonably flat coastal farmland, passing the western fringe of Lake Illawarra via the suburbs of Dapto, Albion Park Rail, Oak Flats, Dunmore & quarry, Minnimurra, Bombo & quarry, then into the coastal tourist township of Kiama.
This route is Part3 in a series of 3 and covers from Unanderra-Kembla Grange-Dapto-Albion Park Rail-Oak Flats-Dunmore-Minnimurra-Bombo-Kiama but is not quite prototypical.
The line from Wollongong to Port Kembla was electrified in 1984, while that to Kiama much later.
This route is partially electrified to Albion Park Rail.
The era covered by this route can accomodate both diesel & electric locomotive power, although the diesel powered Endeavour service
still runs from Dapto to Kiama, while the electrification program is being completed.
