NSW Illawarra & Southern Highlands Part 1

Located one hour south of Sydney NSW, the Illawarra region is centred around the coastal industrial City of Wollongong and the deep water port at Port Kembla. Coal and wheat are the main products moved to the port from other districts in NSW.
A single line makes it way to the south from Unanderra while a branch heads up the escarpment to Robertson, before joining the NSW Main Southern Line at Moss Vale.
The Unanderra-Robertson line climbs from 13.7m to 753.1m above sea-level at Ranelagh before dropping down into Robertson at 739.9m. The initial climb from Unanderra to Summit Tank is the steepest at 3% and is mainly cut into sandstone. The climb to Mt Murray is a grade of 1% through rolling hills of fertile farmland.
North of Unanderra is the coastal City of Wollongong. South is the fertile coastal plain to Kiama.
Cut into the surrounding sandstone, the Dombarton loop was installed to allow trains to pass on this steepest section of the climb, and for steam locos to take on water.
This route is Part1 in a series of 3 and covers from Unanderra-Dombarton-Robertson but is not quite prototypical.
The era covered by this route is mainly NSW diesel locomotive power but could just as easily accomodate steam as these has been little change in the nature of the route since it was first commissioned.
