K-27 #454

The #454 is a K-27 Class Mikado locomotive built in 1903 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philidelphia, PA. The K-27's were affectionately referred to as 'Mudhens' due to their unfortunate tendancy to derail when they first went into service. The #454 started its service with the D&RGW RR. And for most of her life she ran the narrow gauge lines in Southwestern Colorado. She operated out of Montrose, CO as a helper engine over Cerro Summit. In the late 40's the Rio Grande Southern began to lease locomotives from the D&RGW to replace the outdated steam power in their own stable. The #454 made many a run over Lizard Head Pass for the RGS. Then at the end of the line she was dismantled on November 6th, 1953 after 50 years of faithful service on the narrow gauge highlines of Colorado.
