PLL TWB 1923 7 Plank Open
A RCH standard 1923 7 plank open wagon with bottom, end and side doors in the livery of Thomas Wilson Brewster of London. These wagons were owned by this company (hence 'private owner') and not the railway company. From 1940 onwards most private owner wagons were 'pooled' which meant they could be used anywhere in the UK rather than on particular routes which was the normal state of affairs before this date.
Once 'pooled' the wagons received only the most vital repairs to keep them running and the former sometimes elaborate livery gradually disappeared as the original planking was simply replaced by unpainted ones. By the late 1950s there were very few left as they had been largely replaced by more modern wagons on British Railways.
