QR 2100 Class Blue

2100 Class

Assembed by Clyde Engineering under license from GM-EMD, the 2100 class was introduced in 1970 to haul coal traffic on the Bowen Basin lines. Further deliveries of essentially the same EMD model coincided with the opening of new mines,
classified 2130, 2150, 2170 and 2200 (later 2141).

Owing to vast mineral tonnages, QR consistently moves the largest share of Australia's annual load haulage, commonly operating coal trains in excess of 10,000t. To counteract the drawgear tension on 148 wagon trains, locomotives are cut
into the middle of the consist, and operated in multiple with the lead units by radio control.

Since the introduction of the 3300hp 4000 Class, several of the 2100 series have been withdrawn. Ten of the Class were recently sold to Chile.
