New York Central 5 Chime Whistle
A New York Central 5 chime steam whistle recorded off of Western Maryland 6 at Cass. The 5 chime was the NYC's standard whistle. Notable exceptions to this were the Niagaras, Hudsons, Mohawks, and some Berkshires and Pacifics. Most of these locomotives had shop-built 6 chimes, however the Hudson's 6 chimes were supplied by Nathan and the Niagaras were fitted with long-belled 'steamboat' 3 chimes from Hancock Inspirator Co. They also used airhorns, which the frequent usage of was prefered over the whistle by management, who encouraged engineers to do the same.
