Tender Centipede NYC (LOD)

This tender was specifically built for NYC’s Niagara 4-8-4 Class S engines by Lima. These tenders had a capacity of 18,000 gallons of water and 46 tons of coal. They were also equipped with a water scoop able to scoop at 80 mph speeds.

Centipede Tenders (also referred to as Pedestal Tenders) were manufactured by Lima for the eight different railroads, the major users being the NYC, SP, NP, GN and D&RG. A centipede tender is rigidly mounted to five axles that laterally move in the one-piece centipede casting. There is also a four-wheel leading truck that is able to swivel, for a grand total of 14 wheels. This tender is also sometimes referred to as a pedestal tender because of the shape of the container -- slightly smaller at the bottom which had a pedestal housing for supporting the five rigid axles.

The NYC has a specific specification that required a smaller then normal water tank and a water scoop. Water pans, some nearly 2000 feet long were located between the tracks and strategically placed about every 20 miles, This allowed the NYC designed tenders the ability to take on water at speeds of 80 MPH. Water overflow pipes were located along the tender's side just above the truck casting's center line. These over flow pipes allowed for compressing air to escape in order to prevent the tender's water compartments form bursting. Trains with so equipped tenders allowed travel from New York City to Chicago (960 miles) non-stop.
