SJ A2 1004 sway

During the period 1906-1909 a total of 26 A locomotives (SJno 1000-1025) was built with 2B1 axles (Atlantic type) for being inserted into express trains on the existing main railway paths such as Stockholm-Gothenburg and Stockholm-Malmo. During the evaluation period the speed of the A locomotive was measured to 137.5 km / hour. In addition only one A locomotive was needed, compared to 2 Cc locomotives , to drive 12 bogie wagons plus a 2-axle trailer. The A locomotive came up at 105 km / hour during this test.
As A locomotives were delivered they were stationed in Stockholm (7), Gothenburg (7), Nassjo (6) and Malmo (6).
However, it soon became apparent that despite the high speed the A locomotives had difficulties to start the heavy express train and soon type B locomotives were built and a little bit later also type F locomotives were delivered. This led to the A locomotives increasingly turned to ordinary passenger train service. In 1928 they played a minor role with traffic on railway lines such as Mjolby-Hallsberg-Krylbo, Gothenburg-Halmstad and Falkoping-Nassjo.
However, the OKB railway association had during 1925 bought five pieces of A-lok (1000,1008,1012,1017 and 1022) for passenger service. This, however, was not a success as previously mentioned problems, so OKB railways decided to re-build the 5 A locomotive to 2C axles. This led immediately to better traction.
These 5 locomotives came back to SJ in 1933 and were named A3.
SJ had followed the OKB's rebuilding efforts with great interest and decided in 1930 to rebuild 3 A locomotive to same 2C axles and also add a more powerful boiler: BGB, ie the same boiler as the type B and Ga locomotives. Littera name was A2 and rebuilt locomotives were 1004, 1007 and 1021. All pledged hopes became true. The three A2 locomotives were placed in Orebro (1007), Norrkoping (1021) and Malmo (1004). However, they did not go into orbit with B locomotives because pulling force was too low! 1007 and 1021 lost their BGB boilers in 1939 and 1941 when WWII broke out. So 1004 was the only remaining A2 locomotive and ended its service in the Gavle area. During 1970 the A2 1004 locomotive was scrapped in Ostersund. The BGB boiler was saved and inserted into the G6 1449 locomotive.

Under perioden 1906-1909 byggdes sammanlagt 26 stycken A lok (SJnr 1000-1025) med hjulföljden 2B1(Atlantic typ) för att sättas in i snälltåg på de befintliga stambane näten såsom Stockholm-Göteborg och Stockholm-Malmö. Under utvärderingstiden så kom man upp i hela 137,5 km/timmen och dessutom så behövdes bara ett A lok i jämförelse med 2 Cc lok för att framföra 12 boggie vagnar + en 2-axlig vagn. A loket kom upp i 105 km/timmen under denna test.
Allt eftersom A loken levererades så stationerades de i Stockholm (7), Göteborg(7), Nässjö(6) och Malmö (6).
Dock blev det snart uppenbart att trots hög fart så hade A loken svårt att starta tyngre snälltåg och samtidigt så byggdes B loket och lite senare även F loket. Detta ledde till att A loken mer och mer övergick till persontågs tjänst. År 1928 spelade de en undanskymd roll med trafik på bl.a linjerna Mjölby-Hallsberg-Krylbo, Göteborg-Halmstad och Falköping-Nässjö.
Dock hade OstKustBanan år 1925 köpt 5 stycken A-lok (1000,1008,1012,1017 och 1022) för persontågstjänst. Detta blev dock ingen större succé p.gr.a som tidigare nämnts startsvårigheter, så OKB bestämde sig för att bygga om A loket till axelföljd 2C. Detta medförde genast bättre dragkraft.
Dessa lok kom tillbaka till SJ 1933 och fick då littera A3.
SJ hade följt OKB:s ombyggnad med stort intresse och beslöt 1930 att bygga om 3 st A lok till samma axelföljd 2C och dessutom lägga in en kraftigare ångpanna: BGB dvs samma panna som på B och Ga loken. Littera namn blev A2 och ombyggda lok var 1004, 1007 och 1021. Alla ställda förhoppningar infiades och användningsområdet ökade. De 3 A2 loken placerades i Örebro(1007), Norrköping(1021) och Malmö(1004).Dock fick de inte gå i omlopp med
B loken då dragkraften var otillräcklig! 1007 och 1021 blev av med sina BGB pannor 1939 och 1941 då dessa behövdes
